Bjelašnica
Bjelašnica, which kept worldwide TV viewers on the edge of their seats with the men’s alpine events in 1984, is arguably the gnarliest of all Sarajevo’s mountains regarding sheer grade. The 2,067-metre mountain has six runs and six lifts. A typical day at Bjelašnica will have you cruising down the groomers for a few warm-up runs before hooking up with locals for back-country-esque rides in and out of the trees. When you need a break, bump runs in light powder await. After pies/pita, beans and sausage, and beer will have you refueled for night skiing.
Igman
The 1,502-metre Mount Igman is gentler than its siblings Jahorina and Bjelašnica. This is a good place to test your coordination if you are a beginner or get your legs back in shape if it has been a while since you strapped on the boards. There are children’s lifts and bunny slopes. If a cardio workout is what you are after, this is the prime spot for Nordic skiing as well where the Olympic event was held in this discipline in 1984.
Jahorina
Jahorina is the biggest and most popular ski resort in the country. Located only 28 kilometers southeast of Sarajevo, it is a perfect way to get the best of both worlds. Its hotel infrastructure boasts a range of options. There is a hearty nightlife. The resort has over 20 kilometers of slopes, which are serviced by nine lifts. The highest peak here is 1,910 metres and lifts reach the 1,889-metre mark. The reason to book a trip to Jahorina is because of the quality and diversity of the skiing, high-quality snow, and affordable prices.
Trebević
Trebević, a stunning peak towering at 1,629m, serves as Sarajevo’s natural backdrop and guardian. Accessible through a wide range of trails or a swift ride in the reconstructed cable car, Trebević offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, making it a popular outing spot. An essential part of the mountain is graffiti-adorned remnants of the 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track. These intriguing ruins now serve as a popular playground for skating and mountain biking, preserving the vibrant spirit of the mountain’s Olympic past. On the western slopes of Trebević Mountain, about half an hour of walk from the peak, one can find Jure Franko Mountain Hut from where stunning views of Sarajevo Valley and surrounding mountain landscapes unfold.
