FIG CAKE MAKING IN MEHMEDBAŠIĆA KUĆA

Make Herzegovina’s traditional Fig Cake after an old family recipe

Go back in time and savour the sweet taste of Herzegovina’s rich culinary heritage with Smokvara, or ‘fig cake.’ For Azra, your host, this beloved dessert is a nostalgic journey back to her childhood in Stolac, where the comforting aroma of her grandmother’s kitchen filled the air. Azra’s heartfelt connection to her grandmother, a pillar of her upbringing, inspired her to share this cherished family recipe with the world.

You will enjoy cooking at the Mehmedbašića House, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina with over 200 years of history. Once the residence of Junuz-aga Mehmedbašić, who generously endowed it as a vakuf (charitable endowment), this historic house has been transformed into a hostel, inviting guests to experience the grandeur of 19th-century agha life in Stolac.

Amidst the serene garden and traditional seating areas, you’ll have the unique opportunity to prepare your very own Herzegovinian fig cake. Let Azra guide you through the process, weaving tales of old and new Herzegovinian ways, and immerse yourself in the timeless traditions of this Mediterranean region.
